Pauper's Cemetery

With the evidence from the previous investigation, my curiosity soared and a deep path of research began.  Utilizing various Internet sites and the Butte Historical Archives, I waded through not only the history on what we now know as the Poorhouse Cemetery, but also Poorhouse histories from across the country.  Very little is known on these locations as only the remnants to paint the portrait of the condition of these homes to the poor and degenerate population of the time are government kept records.

Records estimate the cemetery to have begun around 1870, nineteen years before Montana was officially a made a state.  The first known resident of the graveyard being Mr. Fred Miller, age 45, was laid to rest in 1892.  Another well-known grave marker placed Oct 13, 1898, was that of Jennie Wells.  Her last message to the world being carved on her headstone to read “Baby is at 318 S. Arizona”, not so coincidentally being the location of the Cabbage Patch, another location we investigate often.

In the almost 45 years the cemetery was actively receiving new residents, there are only about 500 documented burials with only 250 of these individuals ever having markers placed for them.  Out of these 500, the graveyard took in all those that the uptown society rejected ranging from orphaned infants to widowed miner’s wives to the cutthroat murderers who were hung at trial.  This small chunk of land judged not on the earthly labels worn by its individuals.  The placement of graves was determined solely by the order death chose to take them in.  The digging ritual was often described, as one would plant potatoes, in tight rows, evenly spaced, 9 graves ahead of themselves to keep up with the high death rate.

Today, the only indication of this final home to hundreds is in the raised plot of earth supported by a wall of solid granite placed in 1937 to keep remains fromwashing away.  Small sagebrush, sticks, and large stones are all that remain of grave markers and there is no real way of knowing who or how many bodies still remain within the confines of the granite slabs. To save the general audience from the depressing details, I have included this link to an article published on the true conditions of the cemetery from the Butte Miner on December 18, 1905.  Below one can find the evidence we have collected from our investigations of the Poorhouse Cemetery.

Note: This location fulfills qualifications to suffice all paranormal theories listed on our reference page.
